No doubt, for years, diet and workout have been getting all the attention when it comes to losing weight. However, did you know that the simple act such as your chewing sound can influence you to consume less?
Well, the Brigham Young University and Colorado State University researchers have found out that the crunching noise you make while eating can have a noteworthy effect on how much food you consume. The noise they named it is “Crunch Effect”.
Nowadays having meals in front of the TV or listening to music, or chatting with friends on a mobile phone has become increasingly popular. But this can mask off the sound of your chewing. This is the major reason on why everyone advices keeping the TV off or mobile away when you eat.
Ryan Elder – One of the researchers and assistant professor of marketing at Brigham Young University in Utah, US said, “When you mask the sound of consumption, like when you watch TV while eating, you take away one of those senses and it may cause you to eat more than you would normally.”
They conducted an experiment where it was found out that the participants who listened to their chewing sound more intensely ate less food while the people who munched on when listening to louder music ate more – four pretzels compared to 2.75 pretzels for the ‘quiet’ group.
Yes indeed, the effect is not that big, just one pretzel. But when you count a week, month or a year, the sum really matters.
Thus, it has been proved that along with the diet and strenuous exercises, you need to concentrate on your chewing, chomping and crunching sounds in order to get the right results.
