Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun. When it is combined with energy storage, solar energy becomes a reliable and ever cheaper source of energy. It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on how they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power and solar water heating to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light-dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.

Conversion of sunlight into electricity using Concentrated Solar Power
Solar power plant is based on the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Photovoltaics (PV) covers the conversion of light into electricity using semiconducting materials that exhibit the photo electric effect. A typical photovoltaic system employs solar panels, each comprising a number of solar cells, which generate electrical power. Concentrated solar power (CSP) systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam.
Solar hybrid power systems combines’ solar power from a photovoltaic system with another power generating energy source in order to generate more energy.
Renewable Energy Technologies in Solar Hybrids
Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) are becoming popular as stand-alone power systems for providing electricity in remote areas due to advances in renewable energy technologies.
Hybrid systems, as the name implies, combines two or more modes of electricity generation together, usually using renewable technologies such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbines. Hybrid systems provide a high level of energy security through the mix of generation methods, and often will incorporate a storage system (battery, Fuel cell) or small fossil fueled generator to ensure maximum supply reliability and security.
Solar hybrids include solar-wind systems. The combination of wind and solar has the advantage that the two sources complement each other because the peak operating times for each system occur at different times of the day and year. The power generation of such a hybrid system is more constant and fluctuates less than each of the two component subsystems.
