Additives as the name suggests are ingredients which are added to the food in order to preserve it for long without compromising on quality and flavor. Additives and preservatives prevents the pH of the food from dwindling and thus prevents the decay of food. Additives also are added to increase the taste and appearance of the food material as well. The notion that additives does not carry any nutritional value is an erroneous one owing to the fact that the certain vitamins and minerals supplemented with food were able to enrich the nutritional content of the food and alleviate malnutrition. Additives are added either at the production, processing, treatment, packaging, transportation or storage stages of a food material.
Additives are classified into two, direct and indirect. Direct as the name suggests are added mainly to serve an aforementioned purpose while indirect additives are those that becomes a part of the food quite accidentally for instance while packing or transporting. Color additives or dyes are also added to enhance the texture of the food. The use of such additives and preservatives are stringently monitored by the FDA and it is sine qua non to get it’s approval before marketing any food product. Even in additives there are natural and synthetic one with the former more desirable than latter in terms of their health benefits.
If the food additives breach the FDA level then it can have pernicious impacts like hyperactivity, allergies, asthma, hay fever and other adverse reactions like headache, vomiting, tight chest. Thus it is always recommended to opt for foods that have no or bare minimum of additives.
